My Story

The Columbus Police Department Bicycle Coordination Unit, with their narrow profile and ease of ability in maneuvering through a crowd, is often the First Responder on the scene during marathons and larger scale events held in the City of Columbus.

Recent cardiac events involving runners during the Columbus and CapCity Marathons have prompted the need to better equip the CPD Bike Patrol Unit with Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) to aid in saving lives.

Every second counts during a cardiac emergency and our First Responders should be equipped to effectively react when they occur.

This successful campaign will put four (4) of the AED units in the CPD Bike Patrol Unit in time for the annual Red, White & Boom celebration that is expected to draw over 400,000 people to downtown Columbus on July 3.

More from the Department:

"Four sets of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and backpacks were requested internally with Columbus Division of Police seizure funds. These AEDs are intended for large-scale public events, to be stored at Emergency Operations Center. This would allow easy AED access for events that are mainly downtown, like the Arnold Classic, Komen, Red White and Boom, and Columbus Marathon. For outdoor events, officers on bicycles can reach a citizen experiencing sudden cardiac arrest in a thick crowd much faster than an ambulance. The backpack is made specifically for the AED and has extra straps for stability when riding a bicycle. These AEDs would be available for any assignment working a public event, not just bicycles. At this time, Division funds are not available for this purchase."
